What To Do About Liberal Cities?

The debate over the Urbanite Question rages on in the Alt-Right. We see it crop up in different forms everytime there is a terror attack in a city.

Stockholm attack

“Good.” the country bumpkins say. “Let them suffer for their stupidity.”

And there is a reason for this resentment, after all, with few exceptions, most urbanites are liberals, and most liberals are urbanites. We can throw many suburbs into the equation as well on the side of the urbanites, but it is a more complicated topic…

In general though, the urbanites vote for liberal policies and then reap the consequences for their beliefs with mind-numbing repetitiveness everytime that a terror attack occurs.

London attack

With their larger population and greater concentration of wealth, cities can dominate the political discourse in a country. Bourgeois culture grows and spreads like a tumor.  Country folk are mocked for their reactionary attitudes.

Not only that, but most cities are net drains on the population. The density is dysgenic. Without a constant influx of arrivals from the countryside, the cities would die. If the trickle from the countryside turns into a stream, then the population of a country begins to plummet. The evils of urban living are almost too numerous to list.

And the conflict between the conservative countryside and the liberal cities seems to be almost eternal…

One of my favorite movies is the gritty Brother series filmed by the acclaimed Russian director, Balabanov.

The plot is dense, but also rather basic at its most fundamental level. The main character, Danila, comes to St. Petersburg from the sticks in search of his brother. In the city he encounters leering immigrants, loose women, degenerate students and finally rejection. There is a scene at the end of the movie where the main character has seemingly conquered, but winds up all alone with a homeless German.

Danila: You said that the city was a powerful force. But everyone here is weak.

German: The city is a dark force. The city takes away our strength. The strong become weak. Like what happened to you.

 3.42- 5.05

Those who have made the move to a big city have felt it. That powerful force and energy that pulls one in and offers excitement, lights and delight. The heart quickens as it adjusts to the pace of the city and you feel so alive. This is it! The height of stimulatory delight. The dull, tedious monotony of the suburbs gracefully fades away as you spend your evenings rushing from one party to the next. People to meet, places to be, cafes to try, money to fritter away.

Cities are also bastions of culture and art. A nation’s history and accomplishments are put on display in a city’s museums and parks. Cities are full of history and showcase the accomplishments of our people. But after awhile, the rythmn of the city begins to resemble the grinding of gears at a meat factory, kneading you into fatigue. The culture of any major city is varying degrees of liberal and cosmopolitan, regardless of the country you find yourself in. And the conformity is crushing, despite the anonymity that the big city provides. Perhaps it is simply the population density- or maybe the anonymity makes us more atomized and prone to seek out community through signaling behavior… I’m not quite sure yet.

But are cities by their very nature forces of liberalism? Do they turn us into meeker, shallower, more liberal versions of ourselves? Perhaps the film is right.

So what do we do about the Urbanite Question? Modern society can’t function without them, but we are stuck with the negative social effects of the cities. Funny enough, I’ve written before about the necessity for Alt-Right Gentrification:

Cities facilitate culture or in our case: counter-culture. We need the shitlords to start moving in and carving out shitlord neighborhoods. No more of this running away innawoods or to Cascadia. Fight the atomization, fight the cultural death of Suburbia.

Take back the cities through Gentrification… even if you have to wear skinny jeans to blend in while doing it.

From time to time in history, the city has gone too far and the countryside has risen in revolt. Then the countryside starts moving into the city, but with torches and pitchforks in hand. Speaking of which, the Alt-Right has established an outpost on the outskirts of Washington, DC. And over the weekend, Richard Spencer made a foray deep into enemy territory.

As expected, the area was crawling with Antifa and Diversity shock troops. The Shitlord Corps had to beat a hasty retreat…this time. Spencer’s approach however is the correct one. From time to time, fresh blood is needed in the stagnating decadent capital cities of the modern world. The Alt-Right will not retreat to Cascadia, but instead go deeper and deeper into enemy territory. In time, perhaps rural America will do the same.

  • No, taking responsibility and gathering a group of Alt Right guys to take over a neighborhood is a good beginning….

  • “Take back the cities through Gentrification… even if you have to wear skinny jeans to blend in while doing it.”

I.e., the Hipster Racist option. The old MWIR discussed this all the time – you share an apartment in the city with one or two other families, that way everyone can get the benefits of the city while still maintaining a home base in the suburbs.

The White Liberals that everyone hates so much are already gentrifying the cities. “Hipster” is a code word for “White.” “Gentrification” is a code word for “whitey is taking over the neighborhood.”

    • The altright cannot afford to ignore all the white people in cities, particularly in America’s big, coastal cities.

      • The guy at AltLeft.com is the best effort so far at reaching racist urban white liberals. He describes himself as “the left wing of the alt right.”

Basically, “liberals are the real racists” but in a good way.

  • Good article, and it bolsters a belief I’ve always held…The differences between populations are not so much defined by national boundaries, as by rural vs. urban. I’ve built up this opinion by traveling and living throughout the U. S. and portions of Western Europe. This is painting with a broad brush, I am aware, but contains a kernel of truth. I’m pleased that the only thing approaching a city in which I’ve lived is Duluth, Minnesota, population app. 86,000, much too big and subsequently fled to the sticks.

  • We used to visit Italian cities through the year. Since the migrant problem over the last ten years has made them increasingly unpleasant places to stay, our family trips tend to be to Croatia now. Cities like Split are wonderful. Entirely European – I don’t think there is even a Chinese restaurant in Split – with lots of history and above all safe. I hope they stay that way.

  • It has less to do with being a “country bumpkin” and more to do with one’s exposure to real diversity. How much daily exposure do you think these rich Hollywood types have to real diversity? Answer: virtually none.

People should refuse to listen to anyone who lives a sheltered life in a lily-white gated community and is protected by armed guards. It’s all nonsense. Charlatans like Hillary and Bernie pander to blacks and admonish whites while living an incredibly sheltered life. Simply force them to live the life they advocate for less fortunate whites and see if they sing that same song then.

  • People in cities are liberal on social issues, because the denizens of cities live in close proximity, and have to get along. People in cities are liberal on economic issues, because healthy cities need efficient government services in order to function. People in cities are not liberal on racial issues. Even in diverse cities like New York and Chicago, different races live in different neighborhoods. The main reason American suburbia boomed in the post war years was because white people were fleeing blacks. Uban whites are not necessarily unsympathetic to the altright’s message.

    • very few of them are involved in the hard work that makes things in our society work. makes them more prone to give it away. either very poor or very rich

  • I remember reading a short Lovecraft story set in NYC, no doubt inspired by his time living there. In the opening, he makes a really chilling observation. He says the the New York which he lives in is not a continuation, as present London (at the time) was of old London, or Paris of Paris. That the New York which he was walking through had little to do with the city which it grew from, and was like a corpse crawling with foreign creatures more than a whole, integrated and living body.

I think that the NY model has been applied across the board, throughout the West. In D. H. Lawrence’s Sons and Lovers, for example, London isn’t seen as this terrible place by the rural mining family, it’s seen as the citadel, the crowing glory of their civilization, and the family is immensely proud to have one of their sons living there. Who thinks like that today? The urbanite is seen as the enemy, because the cities are like infected wounds, the site of entrance for all of the poisons which are eroding away at traditional society. The electoral map shouldn’t have looked like that; a healthy society has regional conflicts, not one in which every region is united in opposition to their respective purulent central arteries.

    • An excellent observation, STM, worth far more than this essay here, at altright.com. After I read it (your comment), I was moved to do two things. One was to identify the Lovecraft story, which turns out to have been called “He” and to have been published in Weird Tales in 1926. Googling its phrase “stone and stridor” pulls up that info pretty quickly.

The other thing I did was begin wondering just how many cultural figures or entities had remarked on that change in New York City, the change whose essence Lovecraft had identified. Maybe you’re familiar with the 2009 book “Defending the Master Race,” which was about Madison Grant. Having recently looked at part of it at Google Books, I knew it would provide some information on this subject. In returning to it just now, upon my having absorbed your comment, I found a few things, including the following, from the book’s page thirty-three:

“In the twenty-nine years that Madison Grant [who was born in 1865] had been alive, the population of New York City had increased 250 percent. And the main source of this increase had been immigration. … Grant’s friend George Horace Lorimer (editor of the Saturday Evening Post) looked out on this ‘Babel of aliens’ and realized with consternation that ‘New York is now a great foreign city with an American quarter.'”

(For brevity’s sake, I elided the quite-interesting central section of that paragraph. Also, I omitted a footnote at its end.)

Here, from the book’s page 12:

“In his Education, Henry Adams describes a visit he made to New York City at the turn of the twentieth century: ‘A traveler in the highways of history looked out of the club window on the turmoil of Fifth Avenue, and felt himself in Rome, under Diocletian, witnessing the anarchy.'”

      (Again, I’ve omitted the footnote.)

Also from page 12, is this, with its own Google-friendly phrase:

“Like Henry James, who observed the immigrants arriving in New York and was revolted by ‘the visible act of ingurgitation’ ….”

My Googling of “visible act of ingurgitation” led me to a 2010 book called “Not Fit for Our Society: Nativism and Immigration,” which turned out not only to quote the full passage in which Henry James employs that phrase but to use the phrase itself as a chapter title. I’m not sure the (((author))) of the book about Madison Grant was correct in saying Henry James was “revolted” by what he’d seen of Ellis Island.

At Wikipedia, to shift sources, the statement below is attributed to Edith Wharton, who, as I imagine you know, was a New Yorker, as was Madison Grant, and was born just a few years before Grant. Apparently, the statement comes from the 1936 reprint of The House of Mirth, her novel of 1905:

“When I wrote House of Mirth I held, without knowing it, two trumps in my hand. One was the fact that New York society in the nineties was a field as yet unexploited by a novelist who had grown up in that little hot-house of tradition and conventions; and the other, that as yet these traditions and conventions were unassailed, and tacitly regarded as unassailable.”

So–that’s a sampler, or a proto-sampler. However great may be the number of similar statements that could be compiled, what really strikes me is, in the first place, Lovecraft’s succinct identification of the phenomenon—the discontinuity in New York’s growth—and, in the second place, your observation that “the NY model has been applied across the board, throughout the West.”

      • It’s very interesting how sharp the change is, how universally recognized it was, and how people have little to no consciousness of it today. Initially exploring this idea was surreal to me, because growing up in the last few decades in the West one is fed a prevailing line: ‘you’re on one of two teams: city people or rural folk’. It’s a severe handicap that nobody recognizes, almost as if we were all born into a society in which every child had one eye put out at birth, and then suddenly realized that at one time this hadn’t been the case.

I also think it is related to the fetishization of East Asian, especially Japanese society, which still exhibits regional breaks instead of a rural/urban split, and much more vertically integrated cultures. In the beginning of Chesterton’s ‘The Everlasting Man’, he discusses the idea that modern anti-Traditional Westerners were wallowing a ‘valley of disillusion’ between acceptance of Western/Christian tradition because it is passed down and acceptance of it because it is new/interesting/shocking. He actually very presciently references conversion attempts in China during which the Apostles were reimagined as Mandarins, and proposed that it would be more effective to try that tactic on Europe than to appeal to tradition. This is because it would be reintroducing tradition in a novel guise with all of the force of shock which it ought to demand, while dispelling the sort of mental lethargy and boredom surrounding older forms. This is essentially what happened with the Alt Right, in my opinion, and anime. A young generation was exposed to Western values, aesthetics, and principles in Japanese animations, it bypassed the programmed ‘ugh, that’s so old-fashioned’ response to anything traditional, and old ideas found purchase again on a relatively massive scale.

“It is well with the boy when he lives on his father’s land; and well with him again when he is far enough from it to look back on it and see it as a whole. But these people have got into an intermediate state, have fallen into an intervening valley from which they can see neither the heights beyond them nor the heights behind. They cannot get out of the penumbra of Christian controversy. They cannot be Christians and they can not leave off being Anti-Christians. Their whole atmosphere is the atmosphere of a reaction: sulks, perversity, petty criticism. They still live in the shadow of the faith and have lost the light of the faith.

Now the best relation to our spiritual home is to be near enough to love it. But the next best is to be far enough away not to hate it. It is the contention of these pages that while the best judge of Christianity is a Christian, the next best judge would be something more like a Confucian. The worst judge of all is the man now most ready with his judgements; the ill-educated Christian turning gradually into the ill-tempered agnostic, entangled in the end of a feud of which he never understood the beginning, blighted with a sort of hereditary boredom with he knows not what, and already weary of hearing what he has never heard. He does not judge Christianity calmly as a Confucian would; he does not judge it as he would judge Confucianism. He cannot by an effort of fancy set the Catholic Church thousands of miles away in strange skies of morning and judge it as impartially as a Chinese pagoda. It is said that the great St. Francis Xavier, who very nearly succeeded in setting up the Church there as a tower overtopping all pagodas, failed partly because his followers were accused by their fellow missionaries of representing the Twelve Apostles with the garb or attributes of Chinamen. But it would be far better to see them as Chinamen, and judge them fairly as Chinamen, than to see them as featureless idols merely made to be battered by iconoclasts; or rather as cockshies to be pelted by empty-handed cockneys. It would be better to see the whole thing as a remote Asiatic cult; the mitres of its bishops as the towering head dresses of mysterious bonzes; its pastoral staffs as the sticks twisted like serpents carried in some Asiatic procession; to see the prayer book as fantastic as the prayer-wheel and the Cross as crooked as the Swastika. Then at least we should not lose our temper as some of the sceptical critics seem to lose their temper, not to mention their wits. Their anti-clericalism has become an atmosphere, an atmosphere of negation and hostility from which they cannot escape. Compared with that, it would be better to see the whole thing as something belonging to another continent, or to another planet. It would be more philosophical to stare indifferently at bonzes than to be perpetually and pointlessly grumbling at bishops. It would be better to walk past a church as if it were a pagoda than to stand permanently in the porch, impotent either to go inside and help or to go outside and forget. For those in whom a mere reaction has thus become an obsession, I do seriously recommend the imaginative effort of conceiving the Twelve Apostles as Chinamen. In other words, I recommend these critics to try to do as much justice to Christian saints as if they were Pagan sages.

But with this we come to the final and vital point I shall try to show in these pages that when we do make this imaginative effort to see the whole thing from the outside, we find that it really looks like what is traditionally said about it inside. It is exactly when the boy gets far enough off to see the giant that he sees that he really is a giant. It is exactly when we do at last see the Christian Church afar under those clear and level eastern skies that we see that it is really the Church of Christ. To put it shortly, the moment we are really impartial about it, we know why people are partial to it.”

  • So what exactly does the author think is the problem with liberal cities? Just that they are liberal? That we become meeker and shallower there?

Race is the issue, not “liberalism.”

Is the author afraid to speak up for whites as whites? Does he have to use proxies instead, like “liberalism?” Race is not mentioned at all in the article. Isn’t that lame? Do we really need articles like this?

      • Same to you, replacing “commenters” with “authors.”

Note that in my original comment I didn’t say “do we really need authors like this.” I said “do we really need articles like this.”

Can you give a reasoned response to what I wrote, or is my assessment spot-on?

    • Yep – “liberal” is a dog-whistle. The Republicans used dog-whistles to get the white vote then stabbed whites in the back.

We cannot be lured by dog-whistling anymore. We need explicit pro-whiteness.

  • Dick and his crew are going to have to concentrate on connecting with men within a few hours drive of DC, if he plans on growing the AltRight street presence in DC.

      • He needs to come more to the rust belt to recruit. Everyone in the greater DC area that you mention are govt workers or contractors. They won’t have an interest in biting the hand that feeds them rather nicely. Better to recruit the folks that did vote Trump in. The blue collar factory worker that is getting screwed multiple ways. The Midwestern college kids that are heavy in debt with no real job to show for it.

      • There are plenty of Altrighters in Maryland, they’re just not in Baltimore, PG, or Montgomery Counties. Look at the vote totals county by county in the last presidential election. This isn’t New England.

  • I just moved back to my small home town after living in a city that was barely functioning and blacks were killing people nightly. I love counteracting some of the crap they are teaching my daughter (even in this conservative area) by telling her how her great great granddaddy fought the Yankees like hell and they killed his brothers and they burned his house down and they burned his town down just to give us the degeneracy of our modern culture. I teach her about how her white male ancestors should be honored and we should be grateful for them whether it was crusades, confederacy whatever. How the degenerates trying to turn her against her people are either evil or just ignorant/brainwashed. She is very young but will speak up when people start talking/teaching her degeneracy. She will say well my daddy says blah blah blah. Lots of people love it, some people hate and I give zero fucks. This may seem shallow but my wife is pretty hot and agrees with everything I teach her. My daughter is going to be hot it is obvious looking at her and these fat fucking slobs are just struck silent- they are almost intimidated by our features. Wife cooks healthy and we don’t watch tv. Their faces get red and you can tell they are suprised I am not ashamed to be in public. I love it and drive it hard fucking these loons up.

  • The only reason I’ve relocated into a city from the urban world is to get a higher STEM education. Once I’ve got it, I’m gone. It’s a cesspool of self entitled 1st and 2nd generational immigrants.

  • There’s also so much social justice windbaggery going on that they want to declare their cities ‘sanctuary’ to illegals / migrants / refugees etc… its their NO ONE IS ILLEGAL movement and its most likely funded by the usual suspects… for instance today I read that Fredericton New Brunswick Canada is petitioning the city council to declare itself a ‘sanctuary’ city and the movement is driven by social workers/academics and NGOs .. a whole 250 people signed a petition .. imagine that? They want to suggest that that Federal rules don’t apply to local officials the ‘don’t ask don’t tell’ idea.. I noticed last year the Green Party elected MP for that region is on board and posed with these NO ONE IS ILLEGAL movement

  • Not all us of are SWPLs like Dick Spencer, raised in an urban milieu and comfortable getting an Uber from a trendy coffee shop. Some of us are urbanites, some of us grew up in small towns and like it that way, some of us are Country boys. Expecting people to move to the city en masse is dumb. If your career takes you to a large city, great, go there and engage in activism with people like Spencer and Mike Enoch. If you live in a rural area, great, just work to keep the area traditional and white.

  • In general though, the urbanites vote for liberal policies and then reap the consequences for their beliefs with mind-numbing repetitiveness everytime that a terror attack occurs.

Terrorism is a relatively minor issue, at least in the context the author of the article gives. It is demographic displacement and genocide through race mixing that really matter. Nonwhite immigration has many types of deleterious effects besides these two I just mentioned, but terrorism would have to be pretty low on any reasonable person’s list. Third World immigrants (especially from certain areas, like Africa) commit crimes at higher rates, e.g., turning Sweden into a “rape capital.” They make cities unlivable for whites, especially for whites who want to raise families. These are the real problems with nonwhite immigration.

Moreover, I am convinced that most of the high profile “terrorist” attacks that have taken place in the West over the past couple decades were not perpetrated by nonwhite (Muslim) immigrants but rather by Western governments. I am including both false flag attacks (in which there is actual violence, but patsies are used) and hoaxes (in which the violence is fake). This is the real issue behind all these terrorist events. Our people are being terrorized, but they are being lied to about the real perpetrators.

  • The so-called “demographic transition” boils down to this:

A bidding war for young women between the economy and the family in which the economy wins thereby selecting out of the next generation the very things demanded by the economy.

Write that on a blackboard 100 times and you will have said more of a salient character about “the urbanite problem” than a similar number of words filling copy inches.

Meanwhile there are those of us who have the proper perspective already and are looking for serious, workable, solutions. Among them are ways of making it so that young men can outbid “the economy”.

    • In the above mentioned movie, Danila Bagrov moves to St. Pete in the late ’90s, post the first Chechen war and in pre-Putin times. Russia is in disarray. However, prior to the dissolution of the SU, Soviet cities, by large, were cultural locomotives and sources of advancement. Therefore, the concept of a City is not negative by itself.

But those were dynamics in largely homogeneous societies. It’s the racial diversity in the City, which makes them downfall. People with high IQ tend to escape areas populated by people with low IQ. This leads to the downfall of cities.

      • European cities still are beautiful. The demographics suck, but the aesthetics are still good. In North America the cities are souless, ugly and depressing… and the demographics suck.

I haven’t seen the film. Eastern European films tend to be great though, so I should check it out.

      • The flash industrialization led to massive overcrowding in Russian cities and is one of the reasons for the subsequent demographic slump.

  • the cities rely on the outside for food and many other things — remain in the countryside, feed yourself, have many children. Starving them out is the only way

    • Most people who physically are located in the country rely on the same systems and technology that urban folk do. The tiny fraction of the population which is engaged in food production is even more dependent on technology and systems. Furthermore, the EIF is not limited to cities. Anybody who views ”survivalist” videos will see mostly adult men looking for an excuse to play with toys.

    • Yeah, I live in one of the major cities and can’t wait to get out. If others want to move into the city and fix it I’m not going to stop them, but I’ve had enough of it. The Kali Yuga is too severe here.

      • I lived in one major city, Berlin before the Migrant invasion, and it was enough to turn me off from large cities. I still visit cities like San Francisco from time to time because cities are cultural repositories, as the article states. But I could not handle daily life in a multicultural hellhole.

        • I grew up in the city, about 2.2 million people and never really thought about race. I had a lot of non-white friends growing up. Then I went to school in a much smaller city of only 300,000 and it was overwhelmingly white. Still never really thought about race. Then I finished school and moved back to the big city and was all of a sudden very aware of race instinctually. Got red pilled and started to long to go back to the smaller, whiter city. I plan on doing so in the Fall. I just want to get some money saved up this summer before I do that. Rents cheaper, airs cleaner, people are nicer and so on.

          • The area I live in mostly White with a Hispanic minority and outsiders are shocked at how smoothly things run and how nice store workers are, etc.

  • The great enemy of the West is Escape Into Fantasy, which most embrace to protect their increasingly fragile egos. Urban living allows people to wrap themselves in many layers of abstraction, thus facilitating EIF. The only cure/antidote for this mental condition that I can see is massive doses of reality, likely facilitated by system failure. I don’t think most modern people (including most on this forum – I include myself) will be able to withstand such, but that is what must happen. Everything else is killing time and wheel spinning.
