Big City Mayors Vow To Fight Trump On Sanctuary Cities

Mayors of America’s largest cities vowed to fight President Trump’s efforts to curb illegal immigration after Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that the Department of Justice would strip funding from cities that harbor illegal aliens.

During his campaign, Trump pledged to remove funding from cities who refuse to comply with Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainers saying that “disregard for the law must end.” Sessions’ directive is in keeping with Trump’s promise and follows an executive order signed just days after the inauguration, which reads in part:

The Attorney General and the Secretary [of Homeland Security] . . . shall ensure that jurisdictions that willfully refuse to comply” with the law “are not eligible to receive Federal grants, except as deemed necessary for law enforcement purposes by the Attorney General or the Secretary.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti responded to the news Monday by declaring that the removal of federal funding is unconstitutional, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. “We will fight to protect the safety and dignity of all Angelenos, and we will work closely with our representatives in Congress to make sure that Los Angeles does not go without federal resources that help protect millions of people every day,” the mayor added.

While Garcetti insisted that the current laws were “designed to keep (LA) residents safe,” Sessions warning follows the first weekly report from ICE, which details 200 illegal aliens who were released from local prisons instead of being handed over to federal authorities. Los Angeles-area jails made that list.

Meanwhile, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel pushed back, making no distinction between legal and illegal immigrants, according to NBC Chicago.

“Chicago has always been a welcoming city – its history is that of people, whether they’re from Poland or Pakistan, whether they’re from Ireland or India, whether they’re from Mexico or Moldova like where my grandfather came – we welcome immigrants who believe in America, believe in the American dream and want their children to do better than they do right now,” Emanuel said.

Chicago receives more than $1 billion in federal funding and has requested more money to combat the ubiquitous violence plaguing the city.

And in New York City, the tone was more pugnacious as Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito remarked, “We are going to become this administration’s worst nightmare,” according to Fox 5 New York.

Mark-Viverito and other municipal leaders vowed to block immigration agents access to schools and public property and to continue providing taxpayer-funded legal services to illegal aliens.

  • “…..we welcome immigrants who believe in America, believe in the American
dream and want their children to do better than they do right now,”
    Emanuel said.

Rahm Emanuel believes in America so much that, during the Gulf War, he volunteered………….to serve as an auxilliary for the IDF.

  • I was told for years by Leftists that “state’s rights” was code for Racism. Now they are champions of “city’s rights”? Give me a break.

  • Didn’t Black Lives Matter try to get Rahm Emanuel to step down as mayor once since he’s such a corrupt moron that literally everyone hates him?

    • Just so you know. Chap in Blue Shirt is trolling John Engelman at Bond. Everything he says is verbatim a post of Engelman’s from somewhere else (Bond, AmRen, etc) If you look in Nazism, you’ll see Engelman say “Well put. I could not have said it better myself.” to Blue Shirt. That’s because he did say it himself. 😉 I don’t post Bond anymore, but I go in to upvote people I follow.

  • This strikes me as another issue that’ll end up in court where the Trump Administration will lose yet again. I’ve been called a troll, but I think that Trump should declare these cities in a state of insurrection or rebellion. if the state legislatures won’t simply disestablish them and install state administrators who will cooperate with federal authorities to expel invaders, then Trump should federalize the National Guard, occupy the city, declare martial law and suspend the writ of habeus corpus. Then get on with identifying, arresting and expelling the invaders, with trials by military tribunals of the officials who enabled the sanctuary policies. The demographic situation gets worse every single effing day!

    • Recently the courts have been consistently ruling that cities, states, and Imams make our immigration law, not congress or the executive branch issuing orders consistent with laws passed by congress.
